5 Essential Steps for Getting Your FBI Background Search
The FBI Identification Record, also known as a Criminal History Record or
an FBI Background Search,
is a list containing specific information taken from fingerprint submissions maintained by the FBI because they are related to arrests, naturalization, federal employment, or military service. If during an FBI Background Search it is revealed that the fingerprints are connected with an arrest, the Identification Record will show the name of the agency which submitted the fingerprints to the Bureau, the date of arrest, the disposition of arrest and the arrest charge. According to the United States Department of Justice Order 556-73, the subject of an FBI Background Search record is allowed to obtain a copy of their Record for review.
The requests for an FBI Background Search are processed
by the FBI Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Division. As an individual, you may request a copy of your FBI Background Search record for personal review or if you wish to challenge information on it. You may also need an FBI Background Search if you were adopted from abroad, or if you wish to live or work in a foreign country. 1. Contact your state identification bureau. You need to carry
all necessary procedures for your FBI Background Search
through the appropriate state identification bureau or state police.
2. Complete a cover letter. If you need the
FBI Background Search for your family,
then all members must sign the cover letter. Remember to include your complete address and the deadline (e.g. embassy interview), if any.
3. Obtain a set of your fingerprints. Known as proof of identity, a set of your

The processing of your FBI Background Search
will take between 16 and 18 weeks. When your FBI Background Search is complete, you will receive either your fingerprints card with the stamp “No Record” or your FBI Information Record.
