An American company just hired me to work in their branch office in Poland. The Polish police stopped me for drunk driving a few months ago. The court gave me a delayed application of the sentence, so it is not considered a conviction in Poland.
I gave my new employer permission to complete a background check on me, which they have not done yet. Now, they want me to get a police certificate showing if I have a criminal record. Could they fire me after they find out about my drunk driving incident? Should I delay getting the police certificate until the company forces me to do so?

Usually, applications to work for American companies ask the question if you have a criminal record. Read the question carefully, then answer truthfully exactly what the question asks. For example, the question may ask if you have every been convicted of a felony (which is a serious crime in America). So, you could say no if that is true, even if you have been convicted of a lesser crime (like a misdemeanor or drunk driving). Also, the company will almost certainly remind you to give them your police report before another full year is up, so you should get your police report now, see what it says, and be prepared to answer any questions in a manner that casts you in the best possible light. If the company asks about it, you should be prepared to explain why it happened, and what steps you have taken to be sure that it does not happen again.

How did this go for you, Andrew? I’m very curios to hear what happened. I agree with Frank, that you should be prepared to answer questions based on the police report. Maybe even get a family member to help out and ask questions and you can think of the best answers. Being prepared helps a LOT. Also you should think long and hard on how you will make sure this doesn’t happen again. This is not a joke and you need to treat it with great importance otherwise you will get into real trouble in the future and maybe even get a criminal record.

Yeah, I agree with Sean and Frank completely. Having all answers in your mind will really help you and you really need to be careful not to get a criminal record for it ever. One of my friends has been assisting a DUI attorney Los Angeles and he often tells me how difficult life it can be once gets imprinted.
