Welcome !  Independence Township is located in northern Oakland County, Michigan some 45 miles Northwest of Detroit.  Independence Township was given its name by one of its earliest settlers, Joseph Van Sycle, who came to the township in 1834 from Independence, New Jersey.  The township was organized in 1837. We are a Charter Township 36 square miles in size, except for that portion taken for the City of the Village of Clarkston.  We are the fourth largest Township in Oakland County and have a population of approximately 32,000 residents.  Geographically we are located one half mile South of  I-75 Exit 91 on the East side of Highway M-15.  Our address is 90 N.
